Character Concept illustration for my Masters Project based on the crew Caleuche, ghostship of the mythology of Chiloé and their Coloniser Opponents.
All are based on folklore or historical characters, though creative liberties have been taken to serve the narrative.
Pincoya : The Siren of enchanting gaze- daughter of the Millalobo, her connection to the sea and its inhabitants, make her an omen for the Chilote fishermen- if she gazes out to sea, the fish will be plenty, if not the bounty will be meager. But beware- should you look her into the eyes, you'll never return from your next trip out to sea.
Millalobo: Guardian of the Sea, Captain of the Caleuche. Half man half Sea Lion, he was made by the Water Serpent Cai Cai to protect the sealife against the creatures of the Land. In his duty as the Captain of the Caleuche, he collects the souls of the drowned and assists the ship in it's inscrutable machinations.
Tué Tué : A warlock having made a dark pact with a Wekufe (evil spirit), he sends out his head on magic wings to spy and curse his enemies. His cloak, lamp and lantern are enchanted and grant this twisted individual strange powers.
Pedro de Valdivia: Coloniser of Chile, he has made it his mission to claim the lands for the Spanish Crown and seek riches for himself. A man of little patience- he will not rest until Chiloé rests firmly in christian hands and the superstitious local nonsense is stamped out.
Catalina de Erauso: A woman of incredible will, she dresses as a man to participate in the conquista of the new world. She would have been burned as a degenerate when she was found out, but her vicious military prowess, charisma, and a papal ordonnance make her one terrifying foe.
Sor Ines: A Nun of great renown, in conflict with the patriarchal oppression in the catholic church, she fights for a strong faith- against witches, demons and the corruption of pagan powers.
